CareerTALKS are primarily aimed at library and information professionals who are entry-level or mid career.  These short presentations last from 45 to 60 minutes in length, followed by a 15-minute Q&A period.  They can be delivered online or in-person.  Below is a current list of the available talks.


CareerTALKS: Library Careers in Non-Library Settings
Duration: 45-60 minutes 

In this self-reflective talk, I share my 30-year career path in information-related areas and lessons learned.  I talk about —

  • the detailed career path that lead me to information-related jobs in multiple sectors.
  • how to determine the key skillsets you need to land the job you love.
  • how to stand out among the sea of competition when applying for jobs.
  • how to express your value proposition to an employer.
  • how to develop your skillsets while in library school.
  • how to be prepare to negotiate a salary that you can live with.

CareerTALKS: What You REALLY Should Do While in Library School
Duration: 45-60 minutes 

Like any graduate school program experience, library school is filled with course work, lots of reading and juggling family.  For me, going to library school was a deliberate decision filled with expectations of enhancing my career path in information management.  This meant getting as much work experience as possible and learning which career directions to take.

CareerTALKS: How to Get Started in Consulting
Duration: 45-60 minutes

If you are a professional, you have knowledge and expertise that can be of value to a company. You first need to assess what your knowledge and skillsets are. Then, you need to figure out how to package and sell these skillsets to potential clients. Finally, you need to find potential clients. In my career, I built a successful consulting business that allowed me to work part-time and full-time for many notable clients in education, publishing and e-commerce.  In my opinion, every professional should do consulting work at some point in your career. It helps you grow; keeps your skills sharp and allows you to gain broader experiences within an industry.

In this talk, I share the strategies I used to —

  • develop a consulting resume and portfolio
  • locate potential clients
  • land great consulting jobs
  • balance consulting work with personal life
