Open Access is a huge area of research and practice in information management. As the words suggest, this area deals with making resources available and easily accessible to everyone who wants them. It is all about unrestricted access.
Most of the open access efforts reside in academia which is where these initiatives began in 2001 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_access). Since then, the Open Access initiative has matured.
